A museum opens in Bruges for those who never got a statue, and it begins with one question
Museum Vanta opens on Saturday 17 April 2027 in Wijngaardstraat. Whoever enters receives one question on a small cream-coloured card. Which question, the museum does not reveal in advance. Then follow eight centuries of Bruges, alongside people who really lived. A black shepherd dog walks along.
Bruges, October 2026 – Bruges has museums for its painters, its dukes and its merchants. Museum Vanta is for the others: the people who carried the city and of whom almost nothing was preserved. An account, a deed, sometimes one line of ink. The people of Bruges you meet there are not invented. They really lived in Bruges.
No museum for those who became famous.
But for those who were there.
Fifteen people, one route
No more than fifteen visitors enter per session. The first half is directed: in the dark, Bruges emerges layer by layer around the visitor. Then the museum shifts. What happens at that moment remains secret until the opening. After that, everyone sets their own pace, all the way to The Silent Room. The question from the beginning goes along the entire route.
There is a bench.
No one tells you when to get up.
A dog that waits
One figure walks through the museum: Vanta, a black shepherd dog. Not a mascot and not a historical hero, but a dog waiting for someone who does not return.
Where it began
Museum Vanta grew out of technology the founder built to remind his mother to take her medication every day. After her death, it was given another purpose: remembering people who almost disappeared from history. The name comes from Vantablack, one of the blackest materials in the world: the black of what disappears from view.
